Air-cooled industrial chillers – Frigel MRS & HVP

Frigel air-cooled industrial chillers deliver chilled water for a single process or for an entire plant, with easy installation, high reliability and energy efficiency. Whether you are in plastics, food & beverage, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, metals, biogas, air compressor cooling or data centers, the MRS and HVP series offer proven performance.

Frigel HVP – air-cooled industrial chiller family 145–600 kW

Air-cooled industrial chillers are the most common choice when simplicity, reliability and energy efficiency are key. Frigel MRS and HVP are delivered as complete, factory-tested units, ready for fast start-up and operation in harsh ambient conditions—while optimizing energy use, refrigerant charge and water consumption.

What is an air-cooled industrial chiller?

Air-cooled industrial chillers are standalone cooling units that produce chilled water in a closed loop and reject heat directly to ambient air—without the need for cooling towers. All key components are integrated into one compact, engineered unit.

Main components of an air-cooled chiller

A typical air-cooled industrial chiller includes:

  • One or more refrigeration circuits with scroll or screw compressors
  • Evaporator (plate or shell-and-tube) for water cooling
  • Finned pack / microchannel condenser for heat rejection to air
  • Refrigerant selected to match operating conditions
  • Axial or EC fans for forced air flow
  • Hydraulic section with tank, recirculation pump and process pump
  • Microprocessor controller for automatic capacity control and monitoring

How does an air-cooled chiller work?

Water returns from the consumer (machine/process) to the chiller and passes through the evaporator, where it is cooled by heat exchange with the refrigerant. It then flows to the buffer tank and back to the processes via the pump.

The heat extracted from the water is rejected through the condenser and discharged to the ambient air with the help of fans. The control panel maintains the set water temperature by staging compressor capacity according to the real thermal load demand.

MRS – air-cooled industrial chillers 13–75 kW

The Frigel MRS range includes air-cooled industrial chillers from 13 to 75 kW with scroll compressors for indoor or outdoor installation. Units are delivered complete with stainless-steel pumps, pressurized tanks, brazed plate evaporators and axial fans.

MRS benefits

  • Compact design – reduced installation footprint
  • FC version available with integrated Free Cooler (energy savings > 60%)
  • Microchannel condenser and free cooler – low air-side pressure drop
  • Easy microchannel cleaning using a high-pressure washer
  • Industrial-grade reliability for 24/7 operation in demanding environments

MRS technical highlights

  • Refrigerant: R410A (depending on series design)
  • Hermetic scroll compressors
  • Stainless-steel brazed plate evaporators
  • Aluminum microchannel condensers
  • Axial fans
  • Refrigerant gauges and HP/LP pressure switches
  • Stainless-steel process pump
  • Pressurized stainless-steel tank
  • Automatic by-pass
Frigel HVP – air-cooled industrial chiller for demanding applications

HVP – air-cooled chillers 145–600 kW

The Frigel HVP series delivers standalone air-cooled chillers for mid to high capacities. With 145 to 600 kW cooling capacity and multiple available configurations, HVP units are designed for demanding industrial applications and operation in a wide range of ambient temperatures.

The series supports lower-GWP refrigerants and offers screw compressor versions (R513A) and scroll compressor versions (R407C/R410A), with integration into Frigel 3PR 4.0 control systems and the option to connect with 3DK/4DK adiabatic systems for free cooling.

HVP benefits

  • Support for lower-GWP refrigerants – aligned with future regulations
  • Use of non-flammable refrigerants – safer and easier to implement
  • Wide range of capacities and configurations – high flexibility
  • Easy installation – fully assembled and factory-tested units
  • Integration with existing infrastructure and Frigel 3PR 4.0 controllers

HVP technical highlights

  • High-efficiency screw compressors (R513A versions) with modular capacity control
  • Scroll compressors for R407C/R410A configurations
  • Microchannel condensers – higher heat transfer efficiency and reduced refrigerant charge
  • Evaporators: shell-and-tube or brazed plate exchangers, depending on configuration
  • Fans: EC brushless or AC, depending on application requirements
  • Flexible hydraulic configurations – pressurized tank, open tank, integrated pumps
  • Semi-enclosed refrigeration section – easy service access, protected by three-sided panels
  • Advanced controller with user interface and optimization logic
